Income Tax Return is required to be filed by an individual, company, or LLP. Every person who is liable to pay Tax under Income tax Act, 1961, is required to file a statement of earnings/losses to the Income Tax Department every year in the prescribed format which is called ITR form.
It is a document filed by individuals, businesses, or other entities to report their income and calculate the tax payable for a specific financial year.
Here is an overview of the income tax return process:
Determine the Applicable Form: The Income Tax Department provides different types of income tax return forms based on the category of the taxpayer and the nature of income. For individuals, the commonly used forms are ITR-1 (Sahaj), ITR-2, ITR-3, ITR-4, etc. Businesses and companies have separate forms.
Gather Required Information: Collect all the necessary documents and information needed to prepare the income tax return. This may include Form 16 (provided by employers), bank statements, investment documents, rent receipts, and other relevant financial records.
Calculate Income and Deductions: Determine the total income earned during the financial year from various sources, such as salary, business income, capital gains, rental income, interest, dividends, etc. Also, consider eligible deductions under various sections of the Income Tax Act, such as deductions for investments, insurance premiums, house rent, medical expenses, etc.
Choose the Correct Form and Fill the Details: Select the appropriate income tax return form based on your category and income sources. Fill in the required details, such as personal information, income details, deductions, and tax computation. Ensure accuracy and provide all the necessary information to avoid any discrepancies.
Verify and Generate XML File: Validate the filled-in form and generate an XML file. The XML file contains the return data in a structured format.
File the Return: Visit the official income tax e-filing website (www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in) and login with your credentials. Choose the relevant assessment year and upload the XML file generated in the previous step. Submit the return electronically and securely.
E-Verification: After filing the return, it is important to verify it within the specified time. This can be done through various methods, such as generating an Electronic Verification Code (EVC), using Aadhaar OTP, or sending a signed physical copy (ITR-V) to the Centralized Processing Center (CPC).
Acknowledgment and Processing: Once the return is successfully filed and verified, an acknowledgment is generated. The income tax department processes the return and may issue a notice or initiate further assessment or scrutiny if required.
